ARREST

ARREST - HAMMOND – Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that on November 27, 2011, deputies arrested 43 year old Devin Bates of Oak Tree Lane in Magnolia, MS on charges of shoplifting and resisting arrest.

DEVIN was arrested after shoplifting from a convenient store on University Ave. As deputies arrived on the scene, they observed a subject fitting the description of the alleged thief attempting to enter a vehicle. As the suspect observed deputies, he fled on foot.

The suspect, DEVIN was then apprehended and taken in to custody approximately 100 yards from the store.

Update on November 14th Shooting

Update on November 14th Shooting - HAMMOND – Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that additional charges have been placed on murder suspect Gary SHURLEY.

SHURLEY shot and killed 38 year old Buster Lock on November 14, 2011, at his residence on Sharon Dr.

As of November 21, 2011, SHURLEY has been charged with First Degree Murder.

SHURLEY is still being held in the Parish Jail.

For Immediate Release from Sheriff Daniel Edwards

PONCHATOULA – Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports the arrest of 38 year old Gary Shurley of 186 Ford St. in Ponchatoula, LA.

SHURLEY was arrested after arriving at a residence on Sharon Dr. this morning, allegedly arming himself with shotgun and firing upon 38 year old Buster Lock of Ponchatoula.

SHURLEY then fled the residence in the victims pick up truck with his (Shurley’s) 15 month old child. SHURLEY was arrested approximately 45 minutes after the incident was reported. Unfortunately, LOCK succumbed to his death as a result of the shooting.

This investigation is on going. Additional information will be released as it is obtained.

Currently, SHURLEY was arrested and charged with Aggravated Kidnapping, Auto Theft and Violation of a Protective Order.

Pending the investigation, SHURLEY may also face murder charges.

Arrest

Arrest - PONCHATOULA – Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that on November 21, 2011, deputies responded to 39742 South Hoover Road regarding reports of a shooting.

As a result of the investigation,79 year old Ralph Wood of 39742 S. Hoover Rd. in Ponchatoula, LA. was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and the Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.

These charges resulted after it was learned that WOOD fired several shots at another subject on November 21, 2011. The suspect stated that while in an argument with the victim, he fired shots in the victim’s direction to make him stop bothering him.

Subsequently, WOOD was arrested and charged accordingly.

For Immediate Release from Sheriff Daniel Edwards

HAMMOND- Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards and LA State Fire Marshal Butch Browning report that through a joint investigation between the TPSO and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, 2 arrests have been made regarding the murder/arson which occurred on North Baptist Rd. October 24, 2011.

On November 14, 2011, the following suspects were charged:

Heidi Leard, 25 of 52496 HWY 1065 in Independence, LA
Ronald T. Berry, 35 of 1010 Varnado St, Hammond, LA

Both subjects were arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder and Simple Arson as a result of the investigation.

The investigation revealed that LEARD arranged to meet with the victim (62 year old Charles Ockman of North Baptist Rd.) on the evening of October 24, 2011, to perform sexual favors for money.

That evening, LEARD, accompanied by BERRY arrived at the North Baptist residence and LEARD entered the residence. After some time had passed, BERRY made his way into the residence. An argument then ensued between Berry and Ockman. During the argument, BERRY stuck Ockman in the head causing him to hit the floor. At this time, BERRY tied the victim’s hands behind his back, continued to beat him in the head and forced him into the bathroom. While in the bathroom, BERRY submerged the victims head into a partially -filled bath tub where the victim succumbed to his death.

As BERRY and LEARD fled the scene, they set the interior of the residence on fire. It was reported that the victim was dead prior to the onset of the fire.

Both subjects are now in custody and remain at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
