Memorial Day

HAMMOND - As we observe Memorial Day and honor those who have given their lives in service to our country, we need to be mindful that this weekend begins the summer holiday season.
Historically, Memorial Day weekend has proven to be the beginning of our waterways becoming quite congested with boaters.
While my department wants to ensure that everyone has a good Memorial Day, we also want boaters keep in mind the fundamentals of boat safety. I would like to remind boaters to be aware of their surroundings and watch for channel markers, speed zones and be sure to have all necessary safety equipment on board.
Additionally, alcohol use is a leading factor in fatal boating accidents. Boaters who intend to drink should have a designated operator. Operating a boat under the influence is just as serious a crime as driving under the influence.
No matter what activity you choose this holiday weekend; consider the risks, and adapt a mindset which recognize safety as success. Small changes in awareness and attitude can make the difference between life and death.
Sheriff Edwards and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is thankful for all those who protect and serve our country. In honor of those individuals and their families, have a safe and blessed Memorial Day!
