VEHICLE CRASH

March 25, 2014

HAMMOND – Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that the sheriff’s office investigated a vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. this morning at the intersection of Old Covington and W. Pleasant Ridge Rd. in Hammond.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet pick-up truck, driven by Russell Ott (38yoa), was traveling south on W. Pleasant Ridge Rd. when it failed to yield at the intersection at Old Covington Highway. As a result, a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, occupied by 31 year old Sharon Pitts and one passenger, collided directly into the driver’s side of Ott’s vehicle.

Russell Ott and Sharon Pitts were both extricated from their vehicles and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Sharon Pitts’ passenger, an 11 year old female, was ejected from the Tahoe and is also being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Driver impairment is not suspected at this time.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, it is imperative that drivers remain alert while driving, and avoid the temptations of using electronic devices that may subsequently divert the drier’s attention from the roadway. Additionally, Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Brent Burris, Jolene Hopkins and Alexander Southern, all of Ponchatoula were arrested by the TPSO Burglary Unit. The suspects are all former or current employees of Family Dollar. The burglary was planned and executed with the knowledge and participation of all three suspects.
