Internet Crimes Against Children Division - SHREVEPORT PHYSICIAN CONVICTED AND SENTENCED ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES Tuesday, January 29, 2008
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that an investigation conducted by Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives has lead to the following conviction in the United States District Court, Western District of Louisiana:

Today (January 29, 2008) United States District Judge Richard T. Haik sentenced
DR. JOHN DAVIS, age 73, to 200 months in federal prison, with an additional 5 years supervised release to be served upon completion of his prison term. After sentencing Davis, Judge Haik denied Davis’ motion to be released from custody pending his appeal and remanded Davis to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to begin serving his sentence. Dr. Davis is a physician from Metairie who migrated to Shreveport, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. He was convicted of one count of attempted production of child pornography by a federal jury in August of 2007.

The charge stemmed from an online undercover investigation conducted by Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s detectives Toby Aguillard and Chris Duff. In this investigation, detectives were online posing as a little girl when they were contacted by Dr. Davis.

Testimony by Aguillard and Duff at trial revealed that from the first chats, DAVIS aggressively discussed sexual matters with the person he believed to be the little girl. DAVIS repeatedly asked the person to perform sexual acts and send sexy pictures to him via web camera. DAVIS asked the little girl to take sexually explicit images of herself and send them to him over the Internet. On the following day, DAVIS, using a web camera, performed a sexually explicit act displaying his genitalia to the person he believed to be the little girl. DAVIS was thereafter arrested. Testimony during trial also revealed that DAVIS had communicated with other minor females by way of instant message and Internet chat.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards stated: “Because of Dr. Davis’ age (73), we know he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. We empathize with Dr. Davis’ family. However, we are comforted knowing that this defendant will not ever be a threat to our children again.”

This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims. “The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is committed to the goals of Project Safe Childhood. We are resolved to protecting children from pedophiles and predators.” ---Sheriff Daniel Edwards

This case was investigated by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Luke Walker.

ID Theft Tuesday, January 22, 2008
The holidays are over, you’ve made your New Year’s resolutions and your monthly credit card and bank statements are now arriving in the mail after holiday shopping excursions and traveling.

Sheriff Daniel H. Edwards advises Tangipahoa Parish residents to not become too complacent when opening those monthly statements. And he further encourages them to be on the lockout for signs of identity theft as it’s sometimes easy to overlook suspicious account activity.

Sheriff Edwards says, “You want to ensure that you have not given an unintentional gift to an identity thief.”

Said Sheriff Edwards, “The holidays are a prime time for identity thieves to go into overdrive when it comes to stealing innocent peoples’ identities. These thieves take advantage of the ‘hustle and bustle’ of Christmas and shoppers’ sometimes preoccupation with the holiday season’s festivities and fast pace.”

Sometimes it’s not so hard for people to overlook questionable transactions on their monthly statements, especially for those who don’t want to be reminded of how much they spent during the holidays.

However, Sheriff Edwards says there is good news and that you can prevent identity theft or catch it early by taking simple precautions. He cites the guidelines established by the National Crime Prevention Council:

• Review your monthly credit card and bank statements. Look carefully for unfamiliar transactions.
• Retrieve your mail from your mailbox promptly. Thieves “shop” mailboxes for identity information.
• Lock up your personal information - tax information, previous tax returns, bank statements, and unpaid bills - even at home.
• Check your credit report - the law entitles everyone to at least one free report a year from each major credit bureau.
• Report suspicious activity right away - alert any one of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, or Trans Union) to any possible fraud, close the account you think has been compromised, file a police report in case you need to provide proof of the crime, and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at its website (www.consumer.gov/idtheft).
• Destroy or shred documents that you do not need to keep for long periods. Documents such as phone bills, credit card receipts, and mail-order catalogs all hold valuable information tied to your identity.
• Secure financial information you may need for tax time. In preparation for tax time, keep pay stubs, receipts for charitable donations, and other financial statements safely locked away until you are ready to do your taxes.

Sheriff Edwards concluded, “Knowledge is power when it comes to preventing identity theft. The only way to maintain power over your financial information is by limiting other people’s knowledge of and access to it.”
