Crime Stoppers

Here’s What We Are About…..

OUR MISSION
To develop Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa as an effective crime-solving organization throughout Tangipahoa Parish, the State of Louisiana, the United States of America, and the world, with the primary objective of the tri-partite organization (Community, Media, and Law Enforcement) being “Working Together to Solve Crime”.

OUR VISION
To create a safe, secure world, through justice, for our children and children’s children.

WHAT IS CRIME STOPPERS OF TANGIPAHOA, INC.?
Originally known as Hammond Crime Stoppers, the organization became a parish wide effort known as Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa in 2002. With the support of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, a Volunteer Board of Directors was elected in 2007 to begin a more aggressive approach to solving crimes throughout the parish. The program is based on the simple principal that for every crime committed someone other than the criminal has information that will solve it. There are two main problems which deter many citizens from calling the police; fear of retaliation and apathy. Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa solves both of these in that the program offers two important ingredients; anonymity and cash rewards.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Anyone with knowledge of a crime can call the 1-800-554-5245 (JAIL) Crime Stoppers Hotline, to relay clues, or other information. To assure anonymity, callers are furnished with a code number, which is used for future transactions. Callers remain anonymous and are never asked to reveal their identity. If the caller’s information results in the arrest and indictment of an individual, or to the recovery of stolen property or confiscated illegal narcotics, the caller is eligible for a cash reward. The amount of cash rewards are determined by the information given and the seriousness of the crime. The true identity of the caller is never revealed because it is never given to Crime Stoppers. Now concerned citizens are able to get involved in helping to solve the crime problem, without becoming involved, and no one ever knows who called.

WHERE DOES THE REWARD MONEY COME FROM?
Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, Inc is a 501c3 non-profit corporation. Crime Stoppers receives allocated funds from local court costs to pay the rewards to the callers. Its main funds come from individual donations, corporations, civic clubs and local businesses. In short, Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa depends on you for the funds to gather the clues that can help stop crime.

THREE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF CRIME STOPPERS
The Community – Citizens are responsible for forming Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, Inc., and make up the Board of Directors, who establish police contacts, determine the amount and method of reward payments, coordinate activities with law enforcement and media, and generally oversee the program. The directors are also responsible for fund-raising and all volunteer service.

The Media – Crime Stoppers methods, objectives, successes, and phone numbers are publicized on a regular basis by the media. An unsolved crime may be given special attention with details published in newspapers, on the radio, and on billboards or television. The media helps the public become aware that a crime has occurred and solicits their help.

Law Enforcement – A special Crime Stoppers “Hotline” with a well-publicized number is manned by a Police Coordinator. Once a tip is received-that information is forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement agency and investigators for follow-up. If that information leads to an arrest and the filing of criminal charges against the offender, the caller is entitled to a cash reward.

A COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM - CRIME STOPPERS
Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, Inc. provides a variety of crime prevention and awareness information to its community. Crime Stoppers regularly provides public safety tips in the local newspaper, on the radio, billboards, flyers, brochures, and hosting a variety of community events such as Tangipahoa Night Out Against Crime. Crime Stoppers speaks to civic clubs, senior groups, and business organizations. The organization also participates in business expositions, health fairs, and other community events where it can raise awareness and encourage crime prevention. Crime Stoppers places its signs in community parks to encourage safety. Crime Stoppers is currently creating its Scholastic/Campus Crime Stoppers program for all Tangipahoa public, private, and parochial schools in partnership with Tangipahoa Reducing Alcohol Consumption & Consequences Coalition. The group also participated in the CHOICES program for Tangipahoa Parish School System Eighth graders encouraging them to stay in school as truancy is directly related to crime.
