SCAM Alert!

HAMMOND, LA – (June 12, 2018) - The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs Office Financial Crimes Unit would like citizens to be aware the IRS Phone Scam is back and not to fall prey to these scammers.

Last week, TPSO Detective Travis Pitman received a phone call on his personal cell phone from the number (929) 268-0867, where he was notified by a recorded voice (ROBO-CALL), of the fact he had several issues to be addressed with the Internal Revenue Service and to call another number provided to him (917) 387-2235. It was also stated via recording if he did not call the number, local law enforcement would be in route to place him under arrest.

Detective Pitman was able to determine both numbers were voice over the internet numbers through a company identified as Magic Jack, and the internet provider addresses associated with the numbers at the time they were active were out of the State of New York. Additionally, Detective Pitman has received several calls from concerned citizens who have received similar calls from the same numbers. With this all noted it is very important the citizen’s of Tangipahoa Parish understand the IRS, ATF, State Police, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs Office or any other law enforcement entity does not conduct business in this manner.

Please do not give any money to anyone who initiates contact with you in this manner. Please contact local law enforcement immediately. No legitimate business takes payment in the form of Apple I-Tunes Gift Cards or any other type of gift cards by phone. Total SCAM!
