INDEPENDENCE (November 4, 2026)- A former Amite councilman has been arrested in connection with a recent domestic violence incident.

Damon Ellzey, 50, was taken into custody this morning on one count of Battery on a Dating Partner with Serious Injury.

‍
In the early morning hours of October 24, a traffic crash was initially reported in the 15000 block of Fleming Cemetery Road in Independence near the intersection of Highway 1054. First responders located a woman near a vehicle in a ditch who had a significant injury to her forehead. The investigation later revealed the injury came from a physical altercation between the victim and Ellzey inside of the home at that location. The victim reported escaping the fight and attempting to drive away, but she ended up crashing the vehicle into the ditch in front of the home.

A warrant was then issued for Ellzey’s arrest. Wednesday morning, November4, TPSO deputies took Ellzey into custody during a traffic stop in the Independence area.
