Green Fentanyl: New Deadly Threat to Northshore and Greater New Orleans Area

HAMMOND (October 13, 2025)- The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with local and federal partner agencies, is issuing a Public Safety Alert regarding a dangerous new trend: the emergence of "Green Fentanyl" on the Northshore and in the Greater New Orleans area.

Seized in recent investigations across the region, this form of fentanyl poses a significant and immediate threat to public health and safety.

What You Need to Know:

  • Appearance: This new form of fentanyl varies in color of green and has the consistency of sidewalk chalk, gel, or a tar-like form. Law enforcement warns that it can be easily mistaken for cannabis or other less potent drugs.
  • Extreme Potency: Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, approximately 50 times more potent than heroin. A lethal dose for a typical adult can be as low as two milligrams, the equivalent of just two grains of salt.
  • Rising Overdoses: The emergence of this green fentanyl has been linked to a recent spike in opioid-related emergency calls on the Northshore, prompting an immediate drug warning in Tangipahoa Parish.

Signs of an Opioid Overdose:

It is critical for the public to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose. If you witness someone exhibiting these symptoms, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone if available.

  • Severe sleepiness or the person cannot be woken up
  • Breathing is slow or absent
  • Snoring or gurgling noises
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Lips and fingers are blue or grey
  • Pupils are tiny

Overdose Response & Resources:

  • Call 911: Always call emergency services immediately if you suspect an overdose.
  • Use Naloxone (Narcan): Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Free naloxone kits and training are available through various public health initiatives across Louisiana.
